In the surroundings of Llanes we find the estate known as "El Hórreo", by the foothills of Sierra de Cuera. It is located within a typically Asturian landscape configured by sloped meadows and a huge amount of trees (Oaks, chestnuts, poplars, etc....) which provide the place a great landscape interest.
"La Posada de Babel" hotel, built in 1992, is inside the estate. The hotel program was expanded to include four extra rooms, one of which conceived as a "suite" or as a four-bed apartment.
The new and small expansion of the hotel, which is located in between the Southeast beech, arises as a new free piece in the space. Its pure, simple and geometric shapes are added to the existing building according to the Asturian popular architecture rules.
The wood pieces of a greenish-grey hue allow this small part to chromatically merge with the beech forest that surrounds it.
If we look carefully at the place, the typological growth of the implemented architecture has been carried out using additive composition criteria. The different forms are added to the small house according to functional requirements; a granary, a block, a barn, etc. The small hotel, which already has a defined and a complete scale, joined the existing granary and the ruins of the ancient dwellings. Now, a small piece of wood, as a mere object, is added to the hotel. This is more environmentally friendly than a building of bigger dimensions and a different typological scale, even if pitched roofs or vernacular materials are used.
